The legends and meaning of The “God of Kitchen” Festival in Vietnam on the 23rd of December (Lunar Calendar)
Well-known for the long-lasting history and rich culture, Vietnam is the land of festivities and celebrations. December of Lunar Calendar (normally January of Gregorian Calendar) is usually the busiest month as everybody is in a rush to prepare for some biggest festivals of the whole year. Besides Tet Festival, Tet Tao Quan on the 23rd of December is considered one of the most essential festivals in Vietnamese religious beliefs.
In every Vietnamese household, besides ancestral altar and fatherland altar, there is also the existence of another one called “The God of Kitchen” altar. In Vietnamese’s opinion, The “God of Kitchen” is a one who knows every nook and cranny of a place.
On the 23rd of December (Lunar Calendar), families throughout Vietnam maintain the habit of preparing a farewell ceremony to see The God of Kitchen to the heaven. This legend has the origin from ancient folk stories handed down from generation to generation.
According to Vietnamese’s folk beliefs, “Tao Quan” is derived from three gods: the God of Soil, the God of House and the God of Kitchen. However, instead of calling the name of 3 Gods, Vietnamese people generally call them as “Tao Quan” (understood commonly as The God of Kitchen). In Vietnam, the legend of “The God of Kitchen” has been orally transmitted and recorded as follows:
Once for a while, there was a very poor family. The husband’s name was Trong Cao and the wife’s name was Thi Nhi. Despite getting married to each other for such a long time, they had no children, which led to their frequent quarrels every day.
One day, Trong Cao was so angry with his wife that he hit her. Being so angry, Thi Nhi left her house and met a man called “Pham Lang” who soon attracted Thi Nhi by his honeyed words. Then, Pham Lang and Thi Nhi set up house together. When Trong Cao was no longer angry with Thi Nhi, he immediately looked for his wife everywhere. However, his wife was found nowhere. Being so disappointed, he gave up his job and went everywhere as a mendicant to seek for his wife.
One day, Trong Cao went to a prosperous household and begged for foods, and the mistress of the house brought some cooked rice to the door to give him. Accidentally, two people recognized each other. Thi Nhi regretted getting married to Pham Lang. While they were having a heart-to-heart talk, the new husband “Pham Lang” suddenly came back home from the field. Being so worried, Thi Nhi just told Trong Cao to hide in a stack of straw. Pham Lang went back home in order to get the ashes to fertilize fields, so he burned the stack of straw to ash. Trong Cao was sleeping deeply in the stack of straw due to his tiredness, so he was unexpectedly burnt to death. Afterwards, his ex-wife Thi Nhi also rushed into the fire to die together with his ex-husband. Pham Lang found his wife dead and also ended his life by the same way with his wife.

#NationalHispanicHeritageMonth
September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the contributions and culture of Americans of Hispanic heritage. As part of our continuing series, AIT’s own Crystal offers her perspective on how growing up with strong Mexican-American heritage and values led her to become AIT’s @40 Campaign Coordinator.
Though our roots trace back to Mexico, my all-American cousins and I were born in Texas in the summer of 1986. Because of our parent’s’ strong Mexican values and culture, my cousins and I grew up on a ranch with the loving support of family, including my Abuela and Abuelo (Grandma & Grandpa). In addition to ballet, tap, jazz and other extracurriculars, my cousins and I grew up celebrating ‘Hispanic Heritage Month’ by performing ”Baile Folklórico” at festivals, public schools and nursing homes throughout South Texas. “Baile folklórico”, (literally meaning "folkloric dance”) is a collective term for traditional Mexican dances that emphasize local folk culture through ballet characteristics - pointed toes, exaggerated movements, and precise choreography.
Both through dance and in life my parents instilled in me their ideals: to achieve whatever goal I set, to never let go of my strong Christian faith, and to respect the elderly and our planet.
My parents and grandparents showed me that kindness always matters and to embrace failure when encountering it before getting right back up again. One of their most significant and on-going life lessons was to pursue an education that would not only bring me success, but most importantly, happiness.
Because of the influence of my family and culture, I now work for the American Institute in Taiwan, while one of my cousins works as a teacher and the other as a nurse. With nine children among the three of us, we will pass on the same traditions that have guided our families to the next generation and beyond.”

A folk song called "Nagori Yuki" by Iruka. This ballad song composed by the folk group Kaguya Hime has been more popular since it was sung by Iruka in 1975. This song tells about the separation of a lover at Tokyo station. Maybe to another city to study.

...............
The four Han characters 「添丁發財」 are very much adored by the Chinese. They are mainly used to wish newly weds. But I believe that if a non-Chinese understands the meaning behind these four Han characters, he or she will also gladly accept them. Why are these 4 Han characters so well-accepted by the masses? Because after a couple married, children are the new forces of joy who carry on the family line. With these new troops, the couple will have a firm vision for their future, especially for the man, whose fighting spirit will naturally intensify. Moreover, according to the phrase "Wife, Wealth, Descendants, Status", after marrying a wife, wealth will follow along. And after having children, status will come along too.
People who understand Chinese Metaphysics will definitely know why a newly-wed couple must install two table lamps on the sides of their bed. This is a Feng Shui technique, to bless the couple with a noble son soon, i.e. to add a son to the family. A child is a symbol of good fortune. Those with little fortune will find it difficult to conceive. Of course, please do not over-do it because of this reason! You must know, for one person to feed more mouths indeed require greater fortune! However, should an "accident" happen between a couple, and a life is conceived, you must give birth to the child. You must never abort the foetus. Not only will abortion greatly deplete your fortune, it will also be the cause of your future pain and sorrowful misery! Please remember!
Having a newborn is a form of auspicious energy. A place where living humans reside is called a Yang House whereas a Yin House is one where the dead rest. Hence, when a newborn comes knocking, there will naturally be this flourishing energy of growth. This growth and flourishing energy will drive the baleful energies out of the house. This is why we often hear of incidents where someone struck lottery, or got promoted and a raise at work because of a newborn at home. Another viewpoint is one I have mentioned previously, that having a child is a symbol of good fortune, and children is a form of water energies. And the water energy in Feng Shui plays a critical role. Because the water energy brings wealth, just like fish cannot be away from water, Man cannot survive without Wealth.
I, Master Dai Hu, did not just start out yesterday. In the time as long as the age of a young adult, I have used Feng Shui techniques to fulfil the children dream of many people. In Feng Shui, one can absolutely ascertain why a couple remains childless after many years of marriage. For couples wishing to have a child, do not buy a house that is lacking the East and South-East sectors as that kind of house represents a "childless" home. If you have already bought such a house, you must come look for me. I say it so because I know how to transform a "childless" home to one with children. If you know a master who has such an ability, of course, you can engage his/her service, not necessarily me! The Chinese phrase 「添丁發財」 is a well-wishing phrase steeped in Feng Shui knowledge.
